Cypher sets up and connects the accounting system, then writes down the process that runs on it. The test of the work is whether someone other than its author can follow it: who does each step, where the data comes from, and where a person checks it before the numbers are used. The systems in scope are the ones your team already runs, including QuickBooks, Xero, NetSuite and Sage, with tools such as Dext for expense capture and, in the STNKY work, TaxJar and Shopify for sales and sales tax tracking.

The tools in scope and the steps being changed are agreed first, including licences, access and the people responsible for each system. Any custom development or vendor-side engineering needs to be scoped separately from the accounting setup.

- Accounting system setup and implementation, including the chart of accounts and the opening balances the reporting will be built on.
- Integrations between the accounting system and the tools that feed it, such as expense capture, billing and sales channels, with the owning system for each set of data written down.
- Process design for the recurring work: the steps, the owner of each step, and the point where the work is checked.
- Cleanup of historical data where the records need it before a new process can run, and support through a change of system, entity or country.
